LOS ANGELES -- Pablo Sandoval moved into the cleanup spot and broke out of his slump. Sandoval and Hector Sanchez hit RBI singles in the 10th inning, and the San Francisco Giants recovered to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-4 Sunday after closer Sergio Romo gave up a tying homer to Hanley Ramirez. "Im happy, but Im not satisfied. I just want to do better for my teammates and the team," Sandoval said. "Youve got to keep focused and keep working hard, because everything is going to come back. So I dont worry too much about it. I just try to stay positive and keep fighting and have the faith that I can do it." Sandoval, who began the day hitting .173, was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. His other six RBIs this season came when he was batting third. "He was pretty excited about where he was hitting today, and he asked me how much I had to drink last night," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "I know its been frustrating for him, but hes been making better contact, and it just seems like hes got some confidence going. More than anything, hes got a little bit of a swagger right now, and hes got to keep that. Hopefully this will be something he can build on." San Francisco needs Sandoval to start producing in the middle of the lineup, especially with Brandon Belt sidelined for at least six weeks because of a broken thumb. "It was nice to see him go out there and get three knocks," Giants pitcher Tim Hudson said about Sandoval. "You know the great player is in there. And for him to get back to being that great player, its between the ears. Once he gets a little confidence going and believing in himself, hell be OK. We believe in him, and its something weve been saying for a long time." Sandovals run-scoring double in the first against Clayton Kershaw ended an RBI drought of 20 games and 68 at-bats for the switch-hitting third baseman since April 16 against the Dodgers. It was only the third hit with a runner in scoring position in a span of 27 at-bats for Sandoval, who clapped his hands as he went into second base standing up. "When you get the RBI to get ahead in the first inning against a tough pitcher like that, you have to be happy," Sandoval said. "Im happy that were winning and that were in first place." Brandon Hicks hit a two-run shot against the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner, and Buster Posey had an RBI single for the NL West leaders, who beat the defending division champions for the seventh time in 10 meetings this season. The Giants finished their road trip 7-3 and played errorless ball over the last five games. Romo (3-0) came on in the ninth to try and protect a 4-2 lead for Hudson. The right-hander struck out Yasiel Puig after a one-out double by Dee Gordon, but Ramirez lined his fifth homer to left field on an 0-1 pitch. The blown save was Romos first this season in 13 chances. Angel Pagan drew a leadoff walk in the 10th from Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen (0-2). Hunter Pence singled and both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Posey was intentionally walked. Sandoval and Sanchez delivered clutch hits, then Posey scored on J.P. Howells wild pitch. Jean Machi got three outs for his first major league save. Hudson allowed two runs and eight hits over six innings, including a leadoff homer in the sixth by Puig that extended his career-best hitting streak to 11 games. The right-hander went fewer than seven innings for the first time in eight starts this season. Kershaw allowed three runs and seven hits in his third start of 2014 and first at Dodger Stadium. The three-time defending major league ERA champ struck out nine and walked none in his second outing since coming off the disabled list. He also had nine Ks and no walks last Tuesday at Washington, when he pitched seven scoreless innings in an 8-3 win. Sandoval led off the seventh with a single and Hicks followed with his seventh homer, a drive to left field on an 0-2 curveball. The Giants have 45 homers through 38 games, their highest total at this stage of a season since 2001 (51). Hicks also went deep Thursday against Josh Beckett in the Giants series-opening win. "Its frustrating," Kershaw said. "The team played so well and we battled all day. Guys were making plays, getting big, clutch hits, moving guys over and playing the game the right way. So for me to give up that home run after just getting the lead right back is disappointing. Ive got to shut the door right there." Los Angeles grabbed a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Puig drove Hudsons first pitch of the inning into the Dodgers bullpen in left to tie it 1-all and flipped his bat after making contact. "It is what it is. I mean, boys will be boys," Hudson said. "Hes an emotional player and he hit the (stuffing) out of it. I probably would have flipped the bat, too." Ramirez then legged out a double and Adrian Gonzalez followed with an RBI single that ended a 2-for-33 slide. Gonzalez tried to score from second on Drew Buteras single to centre, but Pagan threw him out at the plate. LONDON -- New Zealand broke England hearts with a last-gasp converted try to edge their gripping Rugby League World Cup semifinal 20-18 at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Tournament co-host England was 20 seconds from reaching the final until Kiwis halfback Shaun Johnson slipped his counterpart Kevin Sinfield and wrong-footed last defender George Burgess to dive across the line and make it 18-18. Johnson held his nerve to slot the conversion, his fourth goal of the game, and punched the air before he was swamped by teammates. "We always back ourselves if theres enough time on the clock," Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney said. "We were fortunate." The Kiwis will defend the title in the final against favourite Australia next Saturday at Old Trafford. The Kangaroos, who have played in every final since 1957, demolished Fiji 64-0 to repeat the semifinal results from the last cup in 2008. Jarryd Hayne, who played for Fiji in the 2008 semi, scored three of Australias 11 tries against his old team. The classy Australians didnt concede a point for a third straight game, and have conceded only 22 in five matches. "Weve got a bit of pride in our defence the last few weeks," said Johnathan Thurston, who scored 10 goals and a try against Fiji. He said revenge wont be the priority in the final against the Kiwis, who shocked the Kangaroos in Brisbane in the 2008 climax. "We wont be going in there with that attitude," Thurston said. "Well be worrying about ourselves, preparing the right way. The Kiwis are a great side, its going to be a tough night for us but were looking forward to it." The first semifinal of the Wembley doubleheader, which drew about 70,000, grew into an epic from the opening kickoff. England soaked up intense Kiwis pressure, then led 8-0 before the defending champs tied the score by halftime. New Zealand went ahead 14-8, but England came back to retake the lead at 18-14 with 13 minutes to go. England was close to putting the match away, but the Kiwis were given life in the last minute by a penalty from a high tackle on Sonny Bill Williams by George Burgess. And the individual brilliancce of the Kiwis trumped Englands best team effort in years.dddddddddddd "Were bitterly, bitterly disappointed," England coach Steve McNamara said. "Its a very cruel way to finish." England barely survived a New Zealand onslaught in the first dozen minutes, when the Kiwis were denied three tries by remarkable defence. When the English turned the pressure back on the Kiwis, the forwards delivered their first try. James Graham fed Sam Burgess, who sliced through two tackles and offloaded in another for Sean OLoughlin to go over. Sinfield converted and added a penalty for 8-0 after 25 minutes. New Zealand finally replied with a try of utter genius. Kieran Foran cross-kicked on the last tackle, and wing Jason Nightingale jumped in the left corner to keep the ball in. The ball was swept right, and Luke threw a huge over-the-top pass that appeared to be bouncing over the right sideline. But Dean Whare caught the ball in mid-air over the sideline and reverse-flicked a pass straight to winger Roger Tuivasa-Scheck, who took advantage of a stunned England to score the converted try. Johnson nailed a 46-meter penalty to tie the score at the break. The Kiwis led for the first time in the 44th when England wing Ryan Hall went to intercept Kiwis fullback Kevin Locke but missed, and Tuivasa-Scheck scored his second try of the match. Johnson couldnt convert but made a second penalty for 14-8. England showed its mettle. Right wing Kallum Watkins caught the Kiwis flat-footed to cut the deficit to two, and Sinfield also delivered the final pass for Sam Burgess go-ahead try. Sinfield converted, and it was 18-14. England had the Kiwis at their mercy twice more, but second-rower Ben Westwood dropped the ball reaching for the tryline, and Hall dropped an intercept. Late penalties kept the Kiwis hopes alive in the last five minutes, and they ended up stopping Englands campaign in the semifinals for a third straight World Cup. "Im pretty devastated," Sinfield said. "The best team lost. To lose in the last 20 seconds is a killer. I dont think by any means we had the game won but I felt we were in control." ' ' '
